Husein Kavazović

Dr. Husein ef. Kavazović is the Grand Mufti of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a position he has held since 2012. The Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the sole and unique community of Muslims living in Bosnia and Herzegovina, of Bosniaks living outside their homeland and other Muslims who accept this community as their own. The Meshihat of the Islamic Community of Sandžak, the Meshihat of the Islamic Community of Croatia and the Meshihat of the Islamic Community of Slovenia are all constituents of the Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He received his primary education in his hometown of Gradačac, and completed his studies at the Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa in Sarajevo in 1983. He studied at the Shariah Faculty of AlAzhar University in Cairo from 1985 to 1990. He defended his master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation at the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Sarajevo, specializing in the field of Islamic law.
He gained work experience as an imam, khateeb, and teacher in mosques in Srebrenik and Gradačac. He served as the Mufti of Tuzla from 1992 to 2012. As the Mufti of Tuzla, he made a significant contribution to the restoration and functioning of the Tuzla Mufti Office and the Behram-bey Madrasa, the introduction of religious education in primary and secondary schools, and the revival of the Hikmet newspaper. During this period, he served multiple terms as the President of the School Board of the Behram-bey Madrasa in Tuzla. He played a key role in the construction of the Behram-bey Library in Tuzla.
He is one of the initiators of the Center for Rehabilitation of Psychoactive Substance Addicts in Smoluća near Lukavac, the first institution for the rehabilitation of addicts within the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Together with his colleagues, he worked on the establishment and development of the Agency for Halal Quality Certification within the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He is a frequent guest in all major cities, both in the Muslim world and in the West, where he meets with top religious, academic, and political officials. He has received several awards, from honorary citizenship to Personality of the Year.
During his tenure as the Mufti of Tuzla and the Grand Mufti of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, he participated in numerous scientific conferences in the country and abroad. He is the author of several books and studies in various areas of Islamic sciences, particularly Shariah and comparative law.
